Nicolas Vial: "Stop…"

25 April 2016 - 13 August 2016

Paris- based artist, Nicolas Vial is a famed French painter, illustrator and social commentator. As a French artist living in Paris raised in the countryside and in Brittany. His universe is made of human portraits, phantasmagorical world of animal and individuals, and sea environment, all inspired by the daydreams of his childhood and the nowadays realities.

Raised in the idyllic French countryside, Vial spent his formative years in respect and awe of nature’s beauty, and his work is inspired by highlighting societal issues through fine art and boundless expression. This year’s theme for Le French GourMay, Alsace, is a perfect match for Vial’s work. The famed region of culture and history is also a picturesque ode to Mother Nature’s beauty with rolling valleys, lush forests and an abundance of fine vineyards scattered throughout a truly stunning corner of the world.

Vial’s versatile style expresses his poetic view of humanity’s self-destructive tendencies, documenting his perspective of the human condition with vibrancy and often a comical wink or a knowing smile. From aesthetically distorted great works on canvas to newspaper cartoons and political caricatures, Vial has been celebrated in galleries and museums across France and Europe. He is the illustrator for French Magazine Le Figaro, and since 1982, his work has been regularly featured in Le Monde and countless other national publications including L’Express, Le Journal du Dimanche, Elle and many others. He has also been honored as the Official Painter of the French Naval Army and is an accomplished author of 20 books.
